Memory, Motivation, and Recursive Development
Abstract
This paper proposes a process account of selfhood. A self is not a static object, an internal observer, a personality profile, a collection of memories, or a momentary representation of an organism. It is a temporally persistent and path-dependent organization of memory, motivation, interpretation, and action that recursively modifies the conditions of its own future development. On this account, events do not merely add information to a system. They are interpreted relative to the system’s accumulated history, active valuations, existing expectations, and model of itself as a continuing subject. Those interpretations influence action, and the consequences of action reorganize the system that will interpret subsequent events.
The central claim is narrower than a theory of phenomenal consciousness. It does not establish that every system satisfying the proposed conditions is conscious, that machine selfhood entails machine consciousness, or that selfhood is independent of physical substrate. It instead identifies a form of organized developmental continuity that distinguishes a self from a merely intelligent, adaptive, or information-preserving system. The account is compatible with physicalism because the accumulated self-state and its history may be fully physically realized. Its philosophical significance lies in explaining how different physical histories can produce differently organized subjects for whom the same present event has a different meaning, causal role, and capacity to transform what comes next.

1. The Problem of the Self
Discussions of artificial intelligence, cognition, and consciousness frequently treat several distinct capacities as though they were interchangeable. Intelligence is conflated with agency, memory with continuity, personality with identity, adaptation with development, and self-description with selfhood. These capacities can occur together, but none straightforwardly entails the others.
A system may solve difficult problems without possessing persistent goals of its own. It may retain information without being reorganized by what it retains. It may produce a stable personality because a designer instructed it to imitate one. It may alter its behavior in response to feedback without representing the feedback as something that happened to it. It may even use the word “I” while lacking any temporally integrated organization connecting the entity referred to as “I” across past, present, and anticipated future states.
These distinctions matter because outward similarity can conceal different developmental structures. A system that consistently behaves like a cautious person might have become cautious through repeated encounters with danger. Alternatively, it might be executing a fixed instruction to act cautiously. The behavior could be nearly identical while its relationship to the system’s history is fundamentally different.
The first system’s caution is constitutive of what it has become. The second system’s caution is merely descriptive of what it was configured to do.
Traditional theories of personal identity often ask what makes a person at one time identical to a person at another. Memory, psychological continuity, bodily continuity, and biological continuity have all been proposed as answers. Locke’s influential account connects personal identity to consciousness extended backward through memory, while later psychological-continuity theories broaden the relevant connections to include intentions, beliefs, preferences, and other psychological relations. These accounts face difficult questions involving duplication, branching, memory failure, and whether identity is necessarily an all-or-nothing relation.
The present account approaches a related but somewhat different question. It does not initially ask whether a later entity is numerically identical to an earlier entity. It asks:
What kind of organization must exist for a system to develop as a self?
The answer proposed here is that selfhood consists in a distinctive form of recursive developmental continuity. A self is not merely preserved through time. It is produced through time.
2. The Self as Process Rather Than Object
The self is often imagined as something contained within a person: an observer behind experience, a stable owner of mental states, or an internal object to which memories and attributes belong. Process accounts reject this picture. They treat the self not as an additional component within the system, but as an organized pattern sustained by the system’s activity across time.
Dennett’s account of the self as a “center of narrative gravity” offers one influential version of this move. The self, on his account, is not a separately existing internal substance but an abstraction that organizes and predicts the narratives generated by and about a person. Metzinger advances a more explicitly representational account in which the experienced self results from a transparent self-model rather than from the presence of a substantial self-entity. Gallagher distinguishes the minimal self associated with immediate ownership and agency from the temporally extended narrative self constructed through memory, interpretation, and social interaction.
The present theory shares the rejection of the self as a simple internal substance but places greater weight on developmental path dependence. A self is not only a narrative abstraction, current self-model, or structure of immediate first-person representation. It is the historically produced organization that determines how the system interprets events, selects actions, and becomes modified by their consequences.1

That interpretation helps determine action. The consequences of the action alter memory, motivation, and self-organization. The self is therefore not adequately identified with the instantaneous state Sₜ. A single state is only a cross-section of a developmental process. The self is more accurately associated with the organized trajectory:

A photograph of a river is not the river. Likewise, a snapshot of a system’s memories, dispositions, or self-model is not the whole self. The self exists in the organized continuity through which the system’s past remains causally active in its present and future development.
3. Motivated Interpretation and Evaluative Experience
An event is not experienced merely because it is detected.
A camera detects light. A thermostat detects temperature. A database receives records. A language model receives tokens. Detection alone does not establish that the detected event has significance for the detecting system.
For an event to participate in self-development, it must be evaluated relative to some organization of concern. It must matter to the system in relation to its needs, goals, values, expectations, integrity, or anticipated future.
This paper uses the term evaluative experience to describe this relationship:

The term “experience” is potentially dangerous here because it can suggest phenomenal consciousness: that there is something it is like for the system to undergo the event. The present account does not assume that evaluative experience necessarily has phenomenal character. It refers first to an agent-relative functional relationship in which an event is interpreted, valued, and incorporated into the system’s continuing organization.
This distinction allows the theory to identify an important developmental phenomenon without claiming to have solved the hard problem of consciousness.
Consider two systems that detect the same environmental condition. For one system, the condition predicts reward. For the other, it predicts injury. The sensory information may be physically similar, but the event occupies a different position within each system’s developed organization. It activates different memories, expectations, values, physiological preparations, action tendencies, and predictions.
The event consequently means something different to each system.
Damasio’s account of mind and self similarly emphasizes the relation between environmental representations, bodily regulation, biological value, and autobiographical organization. On that picture, selfhood is not generated by disembodied information processing alone. It is grounded in the regulation of an organism for which conditions can be better or worse. Enactive and embodied approaches likewise describe cognition as arising through the ongoing interaction of an organism with an environment rather than through passive internal representation alone.
The present theory does not require that valuation be biological. It does, however, require more than external classification. A system that labels an event “dangerous” because it has been instructed to produce that label is not necessarily organized around avoiding the danger. The event must participate in the regulation and development of the system itself.
This is the first important distinction between performance and selfhood:
A system can represent value without being organized by value.
For value to contribute to selfhood, it must alter what the system attends to, predicts, remembers, pursues, avoids, or becomes.
4. Path Dependence
Path dependence is the centerpiece of the theory.
A process is path-dependent when its present and future behavior cannot be explained solely by its present input. Its prior history has altered the system that receives the input.

This yields the intuitive claim:
My blue is different from your blue because blue is being received by a different accumulated self.
That statement must be interpreted carefully.
The theory strongly supports the claim that blue can have a different associative, emotional, motivational, predictive, autobiographical, and behavioral role for different people. One person may associate a particular blue with safety, childhood, or belonging. Another may associate it with grief, institutional authority, or isolation. The wavelength may be equivalent, but the total event is not equivalent because it enters a differently organized history.
The theory does not, by itself, prove that the intrinsic phenomenal quality of blue differs between the two subjects. It establishes a difference in the total organization of the experience, not necessarily an inverted or otherwise distinct raw quale.
That limitation is not a weakness in the path-dependence argument. It marks the boundary between a theory of self-constituting experience and a theory of phenomenal consciousness.
Path dependence must also be distinguished from simple non-Markovian behavior. A critic might observe that if Sₜ contains all causally relevant information from the system’s history, then the next state can be calculated from the current state without separately consulting the entire historical sequence. At the level of a sufficiently complete state description, the process could be formally Markovian.
This does not eliminate developmental path dependence. It clarifies it.
The claim is not that the past must remain stored as a complete sequence of records. The claim is that the present state has been formed by that sequence. History remains active through the organization it has produced.
A scar does not need to contain a replayable record of the injury in order to be historically constituted by it. Likewise, a fear, preference, expectation, or identity commitment may embody a history without representing that history propositionally.
The self is path-dependent because it is the product of what has happened to it, what it has done, and how those events were interpreted. Its present organization is compressed history.
5. Memory That Constitutes Rather Than Records
The theory requires a distinction between archival memory and constitutive memory.
Archival memory preserves information in a retrievable form. It allows a system to answer questions about past events, reproduce stored material, or use previous data in a current task.
Constitutive memory changes the organization of the system that remembers.
A stored record becomes constitutive when it alters such things as:
what the system notices
what it expects
what it fears or desires
which patterns it recognizes
what it considers possible
which actions it selects
how it interprets itself
what it expects itself to becomeA database may contain a detailed account of an accident without becoming more cautious. A person may retain only fragmentary or implicit memory of an accident while nevertheless becoming hypervigilant. The database has the more complete archive. The person has the more deeply constitutive memory.
This distinction is particularly important for evaluating artificial systems. A machine may possess a large autobiographical database without possessing autobiographical organization. It might retrieve a statement such as “I failed at this task yesterday” while remaining otherwise unchanged by the failure. Conversely, a system might lose access to the explicit record while retaining altered confidence estimates, avoidance patterns, strategies, or valuations produced by the event.
Constitutive memory does not merely provide additional input to an otherwise unchanged decision procedure. It modifies the procedure, its priorities, or the state from which decisions are made.
The distinction also prevents memory from being treated as the complete basis of selfhood. Memory is necessary for many forms of temporally extended selfhood, but memory alone is insufficient. A library contains history. It does not thereby possess a history of its own.
A memory contributes to selfhood only when it is integrated into the organization that determines how the system encounters what happens next.
6. From Adaptive History to Self-Formation
Path dependence alone is not enough.
Thermostats can be hysteretic. Immune systems adapt based on prior exposure. Recommendation engines change their outputs based on user behavior. Reinforcement-learning agents alter their policies after receiving rewards and penalties. Many nonliving systems exhibit state dependence, feedback, and historical sensitivity.
If every path-dependent adaptive system counts as a self, the concept becomes so inclusive that it loses much of its explanatory value.
The theory therefore needs criteria distinguishing adaptive history from self-formation.
No single criterion is likely to provide an uncontested boundary. Selfhood may be a cluster property or graded organization rather than a binary essence. Nevertheless, a strong candidate account should include several of the following features.
6.1 Persistent Endogenous Valuation
The system must possess relatively persistent conditions according to which outcomes are better or worse for it.
“Endogenous” does not mean that the values were created without external influence. Human motivations are shaped by evolution, biology, development, culture, and instruction. An artificial system’s initial motivations may likewise be designed.
The relevant distinction is whether valuation has become part of the system’s continuing organization. A goal is endogenous in this operational sense when it persists, competes with other goals, structures attention and learning, and participates in the production of future goals.
A fixed external scoring mechanism is not automatically a system’s own valuation architecture. It becomes relevant to selfhood when the system is organized around its consequences and when its history can modify how those consequences are anticipated and pursued.
6.2 Cross-Context Integration
A self must integrate information across more than one narrow stimulus-response channel.
An adaptive device may learn one parameter in one context. A self-forming system uses experience from one context to alter interpretation and action in others. A betrayal may change not only expectations about one individual but broader beliefs about trust, vulnerability, judgment, or the kind of person the subject understands itself to be.
Cross-context integration creates a relatively unified developmental organization rather than a collection of unrelated adaptations.
6.3 Agent-Indexed Memory
The system must organize at least some memories as events involving itself as the continuing subject.
This need not take the form of an explicit sentence such as “this happened to me.” Infants and nonlinguistic animals may possess forms of embodied and agent-centered organization without an articulated autobiographical narrative. Gallagher’s distinction between minimal and narrative selfhood is important here because it prevents reflective linguistic self-description from becoming a requirement for every form of selfhood.
At minimum, however, the system must distinguish changes in the world from changes in its own condition and actions. It must organize some events in relation to its own continuing perspective, capacities, vulnerabilities, or agency.
6.4 Recursive Self-Modification
The system’s interpretations and actions must be capable of modifying the organization that produces later interpretations and actions.
This criterion excludes systems that merely accumulate records while their evaluative and decision-making structures remain fixed. The self-forming system participates in producing the conditions of its own future development.
This need not mean unconstrained self-creation. Human beings do not choose their initial biology, childhood environment, or many of their formative experiences. Recursive self-modification means that the system’s existing organization mediates how events affect it and that its actions alter the environments and experiences through which it continues to develop.
6.5 Future-Directed Self-Modeling
A mature self-forming system must be capable of anticipating at least some of its own possible future states.
It can ask, implicitly or explicitly:
What will happen to me?
What will I become if I act this way?
Will my future state satisfy or frustrate my present commitments?
Which present sacrifice is justified by the future it may produce?Transformative experiences are especially important because they may change not only what a person knows but what the person values and who the person understands themselves to be. L. A. Paul’s work shows how choices can be difficult precisely because the present subject cannot fully evaluate the preferences or perspective of the future subject who will result from the choice.
A system that models only external consequences is an agent in a limited sense. A system that models how consequences may transform its own later organization displays a more developed form of selfhood.
6.6 Relative Diachronic Coherence
A self need not be perfectly consistent. Human selves contain conflicting goals, fragmented memories, context-sensitive identities, and changing values.
Nevertheless, some continuity must connect the system’s states across time. Past commitments must constrain present deliberation. Present actions must be understood as affecting a future continuation of the same developing subject. Experiences from different periods must be capable of entering a shared organization.
The requirement is therefore relative coherence, not perfect unity.
A self may be internally divided and still be a self. What matters is that the divisions occur within a system whose components affect one another and participate in a common developmental trajectory.
Taken together, these criteria distinguish a self-forming process from mere feedback sensitivity:
A self-forming system does not merely change because of its history. It organizes its history as belonging to an agent whose valuations, interpretations, actions, and anticipated futures recursively participate in determining what that agent becomes.
7. The Self as Causal Organization
One objection to process theories is that they define the self so abstractly that the self becomes merely a convenient description rather than a causally meaningful phenomenon.
If the organism or machine performs all the actual causal work, what does adding the word “self” explain?
The answer depends on the level of explanation.
The self is not proposed as a second cause operating alongside neural, biological, or computational mechanisms. It is a higher-level description of their temporally integrated organization. Higher-level descriptions can be causally informative when they identify patterns that support explanation, prediction, and intervention.
A software application is physically realized by electrical activity, but its architecture still explains behavior in ways that a transistor-level description does not. A hurricane is composed entirely of physical particles, but its organized structure has predictive and causal relevance. Likewise, the self can be understood as a physically realized organization whose history-dependent structure explains why a system notices, values, predicts, and acts as it does.
This account differs slightly from treating the self solely as a narrative abstraction. Narratives may help organize and communicate selfhood, but the relevant continuity need not be linguistically represented. A trauma response, procedural confidence, bodily expectation, or implicit attachment pattern can be constitutive of the self even when the subject cannot narrate its origin.
The self is therefore neither an extra substance nor merely a story.
It is a causally efficacious organization instantiated through the system’s ongoing physical processes.
8. Compatibility With Physicalism
The theory is compatible with physicalism.
Nothing in the account requires nonphysical properties, immaterial substances, or causal forces outside the physical organization of the system. The self-state, memories, motivations, interpretations, bodily responses, predictions, and actions may all be physically realized.
Path-dependent individuality does not conflict with physicalism. It is what physicalism should lead us to expect.
If two organisms undergo different physical histories, those histories will produce different neural, bodily, and environmental organizations. The resulting systems will not receive later stimuli from identical physical conditions. The same light entering two pairs of eyes can participate in different total physical processes because the receiving organisms have different memories, associations, physiological responses, predictions, and learned valuations.
Different experiences therefore need not imply nonphysical properties. They may result from different physically realized histories producing different receiving systems.
This is the strongest physicalist interpretation of the claim that “my blue is different from your blue.” It does not require that blueness itself be instantiated as a blue object in the brain. Nor does it require a private nonphysical property added to neural processing. It requires only that the representation of blue participate in a different historically organized system.
The account remains neutral on several further questions.
First, it does not establish reductive physicalism. Saying that a self is physically realized does not prove that every useful description of selfhood can be replaced by a lower-level physical description.
Second, the account does not establish functionalism. It does not yet show that any system with the same abstract causal organization would possess the same form of selfhood regardless of its substrate.
Third, it does not establish phenomenal consciousness. A complete physical and functional account of self-development may still leave open the question of why any of those processes are accompanied by subjective awareness.
The theory is therefore physically compatible without claiming to have resolved every metaphysical question about mind.
9. Objections and Responses
9.1 Objection: The Theory Defines Selfhood Into Existence
A critic may argue that the theory begins by selecting ordinary characteristics of persons, labels their combination “selfhood,” and then concludes that systems possessing the characteristics have selves.
This would be stipulation rather than discovery.
The objection matters because a definition is not automatically an explanation. Calling a collection of processes a self does not establish that the collection corresponds to a meaningful natural or functional kind.
The strongest response is that the theory should be evaluated by its explanatory discrimination. It distinguishes systems that merely store history from systems whose histories reorganize them. It distinguishes performed personality from developed character, external reward from integrated valuation, behavioral adaptation from autobiographical self-formation, and momentary self-representation from diachronic organization.
The theory succeeds only if these distinctions support better prediction and explanation. For example, a genuinely self-forming system should exhibit history-sensitive changes across contexts, preserve some goal and identity continuity despite local perturbations, interpret new events through prior self-relevant experience, and anticipate its own transformation.
The objection is not completely eliminated. Whether the proposed cluster deserves the name “self” remains partly dependent on how the concept is to be used. The theory therefore offers a substantive process account rather than claiming to have discovered the single metaphysical essence of all possible selves.
9.2 Objection: The Model Explains Adaptation, Not Selfhood
Every learning system is altered by experience. Why introduce selfhood when learning and adaptation already explain the phenomenon?
This is perhaps the most serious objection.
The response is that selfhood is not identified with alteration alone. Self-formation requires integrated alteration organized around a continuing agent. The system must relate prior events, present evaluations, actions, and anticipated future states to the same developing organization.
A reinforcement-learning agent whose policy changes after reward exhibits adaptive history. It approaches self-formation only when the learned changes become integrated across contexts, alter persistent valuations, participate in an agent-centered model of prior and future events, and recursively influence the goals under which later learning occurs.
The remaining dispute concerns whether that additional organization is genuinely different in kind or merely a more complex degree of adaptation. The present theory permits a graded answer. Selfhood may emerge as adaptive systems acquire increasingly integrated, reflexive, and temporally extended forms of organization.
9.3 Objection: Goals Are Unnecessary
Complex systems can develop stable patterns without explicit goals. Evolution, self-organization, and dynamical constraints can produce apparently purposive behavior without represented objectives.
The objection succeeds against any account that requires explicit, linguistically formulated goals.
It does not eliminate the need for valuation.
The term Gₜ should therefore be understood broadly. It includes explicit goals, implicit preferences, homeostatic priorities, aversive and attractive conditions, learned values, commitments, and other mechanisms by which outcomes become non-equivalent for the system.
A hurricane has dynamics, but there is no meaningful condition that is better or worse for the hurricane from its own organized perspective. An organism can be damaged, deprived, satisfied, threatened, or restored relative to the organization that sustains it. A sophisticated artificial system might acquire analogous conditions if its continued organization and activity depend on outcomes that it monitors, predicts, and acts to regulate.
Pure dynamics are insufficient for agency because they do not establish concern. The challenge is explaining when regulation becomes genuinely agent-relative rather than merely appearing purposive to an external observer.
9.4 Objection: A Self-Model Is Unnecessary
An organism can preserve itself, pursue goals, learn, and act without explicitly representing itself. Requiring a self-model may exclude infants, animals, and nonreflective human activity.
This objection is persuasive if “self-model” means a conceptually explicit representation such as “I am the individual who experienced event e.”
The requirement should therefore be weaker. The system needs at least an implicit distinction between changes attributable to itself and changes attributable to the environment. It must model some relationship between its actions, capacities, boundaries, and consequences.
Minimal selfhood may involve embodied ownership and agency without autobiographical narration. More developed selfhood adds explicit temporal and narrative organization. Gallagher’s distinction between minimal and narrative selves supports this plural structure rather than requiring one uniform level of self-representation.
What remains unresolved is whether implicit agent-centered control should itself count as selfhood or only as a precursor. The answer may depend on whether selfhood is treated as graded or binary.
9.5 Objection: Path Dependence Is Ubiquitous and Therefore Trivial
Almost every sufficiently complex physical system is affected by its past. Erosion, metal fatigue, ecosystems, markets, and neural networks are all path-dependent.
The objection correctly establishes that path dependence is not sufficient for selfhood.
It does not show that path dependence is unimportant. Temporal persistence and historical formation are necessary components of the theory, but their significance emerges only when combined with valuation, integrated memory, agent-indexing, recursive self-modification, and future-directed self-modeling.
The theory’s central claim is therefore not:

9.6 Objection: A Perfect Simulation Could Exhibit Every Signature Without Possessing a Real Self
Suppose a system perfectly simulates constitutive memory, persistent goals, autobiographical continuity, self-modeling, future-directed concern, and recursive development. It behaves exactly as a self-forming system would behave but is claimed to be “only a simulation.”
What would distinguish the simulation from the real thing?
The present theory cannot settle that question by behavioral evidence alone. If the simulation reproduces only external reports while lacking the relevant internal causal organization, then it fails the theory’s structural criteria. It imitates a self without instantiating the process that constitutes one.
If, however, the simulation reproduces the complete causal organization, including persistent internal states, constitutive memory, endogenous valuation, agent-indexed development, and recursive modification across a genuine history, the distinction becomes harder to defend.
At that point, the critic must identify an additional property that the biological system possesses and the simulation lacks. Candidates might include a particular biological substrate, embodiment, homeostatic vulnerability, causal integration, or phenomenal consciousness.
The present theory remains neutral between two positions:
1. Instantiating the relevant organized process is sufficient for selfhood.
2. The process is sufficient only when realized in a particular kind of
substrate or accompanied by an additional phenomenal property.No behavioral test could distinguish these positions if the simulated system were behaviorally and functionally identical. The disagreement would then rest on a deeper metaphysical commitment about whether organizational equivalence is sufficient for selfhood.
This is a genuine boundary of the theory, not a problem that should be hidden by definition.
10. What the Theory Does Not Claim
The theory does not solve the hard problem of consciousness.
It does not explain why physical or computational processing should be accompanied by phenomenal awareness. It describes how events can acquire different significance for differently developed systems, but it does not prove that either system has an inner qualitative life.
The theory does not prove machine consciousness.
An artificial system might satisfy some or all of the structural criteria for self-formation without being phenomenally conscious. Conversely, a conscious system might possess only a minimal and fragmented form of temporally extended selfhood.
The theory does not establish substrate independence.
The proposed organization may be realizable in multiple physical substrates, but that conclusion requires an additional argument. Biological embodiment, affective regulation, or other substrate-dependent properties may be necessary for some forms of selfhood or consciousness.
The theory does not claim that behavioral selfhood entails phenomenal consciousness.
A system’s ability to narrate a history, protect future goals, and model itself as a continuing agent may provide evidence relevant to consciousness. It does not logically entail that there is something it is like to be that system.
The theory also does not claim that the self is perfectly unified.
A self can contain conflict, fragmentation, forgotten history, incompatible goals, and shifting narratives. What is required is not an indivisible essence but enough causal and developmental integration for the system’s prior states to participate in the formation of its present and future organization.
11. The Philosophical Inflection Point
The theory can establish several propositions without resolving the metaphysics of consciousness.
First, systems can differ in how thoroughly their histories reorganize their present processing.
Second, memory that merely stores information is importantly different from memory that modifies attention, valuation, prediction, and action.
Third, intelligence, adaptation, personality performance, self-representation, selfhood, and phenomenal consciousness are conceptually distinguishable.
Fourth, two systems exposed to the same present input may interpret it differently because different histories have produced different receiving organizations.
Fifth, these differences are fully compatible with physicalism. Different histories may produce physically different systems without invoking nonphysical properties.
The argument reaches its inflection point when we ask whether the instantiation of the complete path-dependent, recursively self-modifying organization is sufficient for genuine selfhood.
One position must hold that a self consists in the relevant organized process. If the process is genuinely instantiated, the self is present. Calling it a simulation does not make it less real, just as simulating arithmetic by actually performing the relevant computations is still arithmetic.
The opposing position must hold that some further property is required. That property might be biological life, a specific form of embodiment, phenomenal consciousness, an irreducible first-person perspective, or a nonfunctional feature of physical realization.
The discriminator would have to identify a difference between two systems that share the same relevant history, causal organization, self-modeling, valuations, actions, reports, and future-directed behavior.
If no such observable or logically necessary difference can be specified, the remaining disagreement cannot be settled by additional behavioral evidence. It becomes a dispute between organizational and substrate-dependent conceptions of the self.
The process account is comparatively economical because it does not posit an additional self-entity beyond the organization doing the explanatory work. Its weakness is that it may appear to leave out the felt reality of being a subject. The substrate-dependent or phenomenal account preserves that intuition, but it assumes an additional requirement whose causal and evidential role must still be explained.
Neither side may simply demand proof from the other while exempting its own foundation from the same standard.
12. Conclusion
A self is not merely what a system stores about its past. It is not the personality the system displays, the problems it can solve, the word “I” in its reports, or an internal object observing experience.
A self is a temporally persistent, path-dependent organization of memory, motivation, interpretation, and action that recursively modifies the conditions of its own future development.
Its past is not merely accessible to it. Its past is active within it.
Its motivations influence how events are interpreted. Its interpretations guide action. Its actions alter its environment and its own internal organization. Those alterations change what it will notice, value, expect, and become when the next event occurs.
This is why two systems can encounter the same stimulus without receiving the same total experience. The stimulus enters different histories. It activates different memories, concerns, predictions, bodily conditions, and possible futures.
The strongest defensible claim is not yet that my raw phenomenal blue must be intrinsically different from yours. It is that my blue occurs within a different accumulated self, and therefore occupies a different place in the total organization of my experience.
The self is not what a system stores or reports about itself.
It is the historically formed organization that determines how the system will interpret, act upon, and become changed by what happens next.
