Protocol on the wire

In its latest test, Claude Code spoke the modern (stateless) protocol at revision 2026-07-28. This is read off the requests the lab server received, not from documentation.

What Anthropic says

Vendor statements, quoted from Anthropic's documentation. These are claims, kept separate from the test results above.

  • ToolsMCP servers give Claude Code access to your tools, databases, and APIs. [source]
  • PromptsClaude Code lists each MCP prompt as /servername:promptname (MCP). Typing /mcp__servername__promptname also runs it. [source]
  • ResourcesMCP servers can expose resources that you can reference using @ mentions, similar to how you reference files. [source]
  • ResourcesClaude Code automatically provides tools to list and read MCP resources when servers support them [source]

Setup requirements

  • Stdio servers run as local processes on your machine. They're ideal for tools that need direct system access or custom scripts. [source]
  • HTTP servers are the recommended option for connecting to remote MCP servers. [source]
  • The SSE (Server-Sent Events) transport is deprecated. Use HTTP servers instead, where available. [source]
  • Claude Code supports OAuth 2.0 for secure connections. [source]
  • Protocol revision depends on which client runtime a session uses. The v2 runtime adds 2026-07-28 and asks each server whether it supports it; the v1 runtime does not. The docs list which versions and sign-in setups default to v2. [source]

How it was tested

Headless runs of claude -p with only the lab's stdio server loaded (--mcp-config with --strict-mcp-config), user and project settings skipped, and each tool or slash command the case needs explicitly allowed. Full methodology
